In an increasingly fast-paced world, how better to get away from it all than to a treehouse in the woods? Here, we round up our five favorites
Forget the treehouses of your youth (fun as they are), because in recent years treehouses have been seriously upgraded and can no longer be compared to a camping trip in the woods. From Tetsu Treehouse in Japan, which sits eye level to cotton-candy-pink cherry blossom to the UFO Treehouse in Sweden (the truth is out there, or at least in Scandinavia, people!), these unique offerings have been designed by innovative architectural teams and offer the experience not just to become at one with your natural surroundings, but to do it in style, dahling.
Tetsu Treehouse, Japan
Built by architect Terunobu Fujimori from (mostly) natural materials including wood and stone, this charming treehouse in Hokuto, Japan was built for the sole purpose of enjoying cherry blossoms in full bloom. The inside of the space is flooded with light and simple in design whilst the surroundings are pure fantasy. Placed perfectly atop a single cypress tree trunk, the Tetsu Treehouse combines minimalist zen with its surroundings to create the sensation of being suspended in some sort of gorgeous pink cloud.

The Bird’s Nest Treehouse, Sweden
If you’re looking to really get away from it all, then this is about as remote as it gets. Nestled in the northern Swedish county of Norrbotten, apart from the electric ladder leading up to it and its enormous inflated size, the Bird’s Nest Treehouse is virtually indistinguishable from an actual bird’s nest. Very much at harmony with its surroundings, it offers nature lovers the opportunity to disappear and become part of their surroundings.
In contrast to its oh-so-natural and rugged exterior, the interior of the treehouse has a familiar, light and stylish 1950s vibe, and could comfortably house a family of four. Being in the woods near the Artic Circle certainly doesn’t mean you have to rough it – the space is divided into bedrooms with adjacent bathrooms as well as a separate living area where guests can get nice and cozy and enjoy those stunning views out of this little aerie.

Montana Treehouse Resort, Montana, USA
Sitting comfortably among the trees (are you sensing an obvious theme here?), this luxury double-decker hotel known as The Montana Treehouse Resort is located in the scenic Montana wilderness. A dream build for local owners Kati and Darin Robinson, this wooden paradise was built by The Treehouse Guys of TV-fame. Using reclaimed and locally-sourced materials, authentically rustic (or rustically authentic?) space is available year round and seems the ideal spot for those seeking a bit of outdoor adventure – after all Flathead Valley and the Whitefish Mountain Resort are only a short distance away.

UFO Treehouse, Sweden
Is it a plane? Is it a bird? No, it’s a rather amusingly designed treehouse. Made out of light yet strong materials and complete with a restaurant, bar, sauna and relaxation area (!), the treehouse is the very definitely of ‘a unique place to stay’. However, it’s also the perfect way to enjoy Sweden’s majestic, wild nature. The main living area is made of sustainable materials (of course) and can host up to five people at a time, so get ready for the most futuristic getaway/sauna/holiday experience of your life.

Finca Bellavista Treehouse, Costa Rica
Located in the mountains of Southern Costa Rica, the Finca Bellavista Treehouse Community was founded in 2006 by Erica Andrews and Mateo Hogan. The eco-friendly abode offers a truly immersive experience. The idea of ‘immersive’ might all too often these days be not much more than a trendy buzzword, but here visitors are truly able to co-exist alongside Costa Rica’s beautiful flora and fauna, as well as the inhabitants of the surrounding rainforest.
With eight treehouses available to rent, almost 600 acres of the community to explore with two whitewater rivers, organic gardens and local wildlife, we think the Finca Bellavista Treehouse Community is nothing less than an off-the-grid paradise.
